Regular self –breast examinations are performed for breast awareness. In other words, it is to help you understand how your breasts feels normally so as soon as there is any abnormal change, you can report to your doctor early enough.

If you notice any abnormal change in your breasts, kindly see a doctor immediately for proper examination and to run the necessary tests

HOW DO I EXAMINE MY BREASTS?

To perform an effective self-breast examination, you will have to do two things:LOOK and FEEL.

LOOK

You stand in front of a mirror with both arms on your waist or raised above your head to have a thorough look at both of your breasts. You will be looking out for abnormal changes like:

  • A difference in size with one or both of your breasts

  • Changes in the skin color or texture

  • Inverted nipples- Nipples turned inwards

  • Rashes or redness on the skin or around the nipples

FEEL

In order to get the best results from your self-breast examination, you will have to:

  • Avoid the use of your thumbs. You will only need to use the inner pads of your four fingers

  • Use your left hand to examine your right breast

  • Use your right hand to examine your left breast

STEPS

1. Imagine your breast as a clock with 4 quadrants

2. Starting from the first quadrant, masage in a circular motion. Once you are done feeling a quadrant, move to the next until you complete all 4 quadrants.

If in the shower, you can apply soap to the pads
of your fingers to enable them move more smoothly

3. Feel your armpit areas for any abnormal sweelings

4. Check nipples for any discharge

5. If you notice one or more of these signs, kindly book an appointment to see a doctor.
